A large and growing body of research shows that consistent, moderate exercise strengthens how the body responds to viral infection, lowers the severity of illness, and reduces the risk of complications. Does exercise protect against viral infection?

The evidence is consistent. As far back as 1985, researchers showed that moderate exercise can reduce the severity of influenza infection and lower lung viral load. [1] In 2008, a study asking whether exercise protects against influenza-associated mortality found that, compared with people who rarely or never exercise, those who exercise at low to moderate frequency have lower influenza-associated death rates. [2]

A year later, another paper found that chronic, consistent exercise reduced the severity and viral load of infection and increased anti-inflammatory effects, more so than a single acute bout. [3] In other words, deciding to get healthy only when illness strikes is far less protective than living a consistently active life. And the benefit is not limited to lean people: a 2015 study found exercise improved the immune response to viral infection in both obese and non-obese animals, restoring the obese group’s response to look more like the healthy one. [4]

What a century of research adds up to

A large 2019 review pulled together dozens of findings from 1900 to the present on the links between physical activity and the body’s defenses. [5] A snapshot of what it found:

  • Acute moderate-to-vigorous exercise under 60 minutes acts as an immune adjuvant, stimulating the exchange of active immune-cell subtypes between the circulation and tissues.
  • Regular physical activity is associated with lower mortality and incidence rates for influenza and pneumonia.
  • Regular exercise training has an overall anti-inflammatory effect through multiple pathways.
  • The surge in innate immune cells with each bout, plus the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of training, add up over time to influence disease processes.
  • Exercise and fitness diversify the gut microbiota, which supports immunity.
  • Habitual exercise improves immune regulation and can delay immunosenescence, the decline in immune function with age.
